Northumberland

In North East England is Northumberland (/nɔːrˈθʌmbərlənd/; abbreviated Northd). Annexing in 1495 Tynedale, Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1482, in 1572 Hexhamshire, Redesdale around 1542, and in 1536 Tynemouth, Northumberland expanded in the Tudor period. In 1844, Norhamshire, Islandshire and Bedlingtonshire were incorporated into Northumberland.

The region of Northumberland formed the core of the Anglian kingdom of Bernicia (from about 547), which, to form the kingdom of Northumbria in the 7th century, united with Deira (south of the River Tees). A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is the Northumberland Coast. Corporations that are multi-national: GE and Drager, MSD, and Coca-Cola, which all have, in the region, facilities that are significant, dominate Northumberland's industry.

A mine that is open-cast near Lambley, Northumberland, at Halton Lea Gate planning approval was given in January 2014. Attended by students from all over the area, St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy, Catholic high school in Bedlington, serves Northumberland. Referred to in Scotland as the Shepherd's Tartan, Northumberland has its own tartan or check. A banner of the arms of Northumberland County Council is the Northumberland flag.

Largely protected as the Northumberland National Park, its landscape that is undeveloped of high moorland is what the county is noted for. Northumberland has more castles than any other county, including those at Bamburgh, Alnwick, Warkworth, Newcastle, and Dunstanburgh, as border position evidence through medieval times. After Northumbria's King Oswald (reigned 634-642) invited monks to come to convert the English from Iona because on Lindisfarne-a island that is tidal called Holy Island, north of Bamburgh, Christianity flourished, Northumberland is called the "cradle of Christianity" in England.

The Scottish royal family by marriage between 1139-1157 and 1215-1217 held the Earldom of Northumberland. As militaristic and powerful Marcher Lords, they had the protecting England task for English invasions from Scottish retaliation, the Northumberland Earls once wielded in English affairs, power that was significant. An area of outstanding landscape, the Northumberland National Park, has been protected from development and agriculture, and approximately a quarter of the county is protected.

With 15 state schools, two academies and one independent school, Northumberland has a comprehensive education system. Represented by Members of the European Parliament, Northumberland is included in the North East England European Parliament constituency. (Geranium sanguineum) Bloody cranesbill is Northumberland's county flower and her ship of the Royal Navy that is affiliated is HMS Northumberland, her namesake.
